Installing a dishwasher

Did you know even if you don’t have a dishwasher you can still have one? This is a very common remodeling project at Odd Job Larry.

First you need to make sure you have room in your kitchen to remove a cabinet and put the dishwasher. Ideally you want to be right next to the sink so the plumbing hook up is easier. There’s two different dishwasher sizes – 18″ and 24″.

Second you need to make sure you have extra space in your breaker box so you can put a designated breaker for the dishwasher. Once you’ve done that and installed the breaker, you need to run an electrical whip up to the kitchen and to the dishwasher. You either need to install an outlet in the sink base to plug the dishwasher in or you need to have a designated switch.

The third and final step is hooking up the plumbing. You need to install an air gap on top of your countertop for the dishwasher discharge line which will connect to either a garbage disposal or your P-Traps. Then you need to replace the shut off valve on your hot water line in the sink base to a 3 way to connect the supply line for the dishwasher. Then you are all set to install the dishwasher!
