check your railings and steps

Loose or damaged railings and steps are a popular handyman project. There’s a few things you can look for on your railings and steps!

Railings

Check for damaged or missing brackets especially If you have a wrought iron or aluminum railing. There is usually a lot of brackets holding these types of railings together and they will fall apart if the brackets are damaged.

Make sure there is no rotted wood. This could cause the handrail to fall off when you grab it. When the wood is rotted it looses its integrity and strength.

Check how sturdy the rail is. You don’t want it swaying back and forth. It should stay in place and support you. So make sure its secured to the house and to the concrete or deck.

You also want to check the interior handrails that lead to the basement or the upstairs. Make sure they are secured tight to the wall and aren’t loose or pulling away from the wall.

Steps

If you have concrete steps then you can look for chips or cracks. Sometimes you will have a chunk missing out of the concrete. These are things that can be addressed by a professional.

With wooden steps you want to check for any rotted boards. These can be a tripping hazard or can cause you to step through the board.

Some homes have brick steps. In this case check all of the bricks to make sure none are loose or missing. They can be glued back down depending on the condition of it. Also look for cracked or crumbling bricks that can be a tripping hazard.
